Building Futures: Kings County Adult High School’s Net-Zero House Project
Back to storiesAt Kings County Adult High School, students are not only learning—they’re building their future, one project at a time. Together, they are constructing a net-zero house! Applying their skills to a real-world project that exemplifies teamwork, craftsmanship, and practical learning.
This innovative program, taught by Kyle Guisso and run in collaboration with Red Seal carpenter Kirstene Reyes, and Groundwork: A Social Innovation Agency, blends hands-on construction with practical skills and theoretical learning. The result? Students gaining real-world experience in construction while preparing for meaningful careers.
In the classroom, Kyle focuses on teaching theory, math, and career-related skills that build a strong foundation for the students’ futures. Out in the workshop, Kirstene guides students as they take the lead on building the house, stepping in as needed to provide support and feedback.
The structures created in the program are more than just projects—they’re stepping stones to real opportunities. Some may be displayed publicly to showcase the students’ work and promote the program. There’s even potential for collaboration with organizations like the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) to integrate these builds into future initiatives, such as tiny home communities! 🏘️
This program reflects the innovative vision of Kings County Adult High School, Groundwork: A Social Innovation Agency, and its dedicated team of educators, providing students with the tools they need to build successful futures!
