West Pictou Consolidated School Waste Less Holidays!
Back to storiesThe classroom and hallways were buzzing with the excitement of the impending holiday break when Engagement Officer Tabitha Coleman visited the West Pictou Consolidated Green Team last month!
Leader Madame Brandi Brown and her Grade 4 French immersion students shared recent activities and ideas for the New Year. One student, Maya, was a busy elf making homemade hand warmers as a special holiday gift for her classmates. Maya used remnant pieces of fabric to create these warm little gifts, each one hand sewn with care and filled with white rice. For other creative ways to make these little warm gifts visit the Green Schools Pinterest page https://www.pinterest.com/pin/337840409527279419/. The other students shared individually unique ornaments made from can tops and remnant pieces of ribbon, felt, etc. as well.
Team members Audrey and Bridget shared some recent items that they have been collecting during the team’s lunchtime recycling initiative. They are collecting pop/juice tabs to start making upcycled jewelry and also plastic bottle caps for an exciting project in the New Year.
Once the team shared some of their exciting new projects and ideas, everyone gathered around to watch the Green Schools NS Holiday #WasteLess Presentation. Audrey and a few other team members volunteered to lead the presentation by reading the slides. There was lots of chatter amongst the group with inspiration on how they might gift wrap that special gift for the holidays and other ways to waste less.
After the presentation the Green Team and Grade 4 French immersion students proceeded to make upcycled holiday trees from magazines. Here is an article and a video on how to make upcycled magazine holiday trees:

It’s important to remember you don’t have to wait until next December to waste less! For Valentine’s Day, or that special someone’s birthday, you can creatively wrap a gift from odd pieces of fabric, newspaper or even leftover paper from this holiday season!
